Significant traffic delays in Sydney following flash flooding

Sydney motorists are facing major congestion due to flash flooding and shutting down lanes across the city.

The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled a severe thunderstorm warning for Sydney and Illawarra, as a coastal trough heads towards Wollongong.

Heavy rain has left Canterbury with 36.2mm of rainfall, Sydney Airport with 31.8mm, and Bankstown with 29.4mm since 9am today.

Flash flooding occurred on the M5 in Hammondville, with traffic queued up until King Georges Road in Beverly Hills and Arncliffe Street in Wolli Creek. The SES called in to rescue one couple from their water-logged car.

Some storm drains were also blocked with debris, increasing the level of flood waters.

Botany Road in Alexandria and Tower Road in Bankstown were forced to close earlier today due to flash flooding and have since reopened.

New South Wales’ SES warned residents to keep clear of fallen power lines, creeks, and storm rains and not walk or drive through flood water.
