Diraq and Equinix have announced plans to deploy a Diraq quantum computer at an Equinix data centre in Sydney, marking Australia's first quantum computer to operate inside a commercial data centre. The system will be the world's first silicon spin quantum computer to run in a shared commercial facility.
The installed quantum computer will feature a silicon chip containing eight quantum bits, with all cryogenic cooling and control electronics self-contained. The complete system fits within Equinix's existing data centre alongside standard servers, requiring minimal integration and drawing less than 20kW of power. Scaling to higher qubit counts requires only a chip replacement, with no changes to the surrounding infrastructure.
"Quantum computers are about to become as essential to data centres and computing infrastructure as data servers, CPUs and GPUs," said Diraq founder and CEO Andrew Dzurak. "The data centre is where quantum computing goes mainstream, and that shift starts now."
Diraq's approach uses silicon spin qubits, which leverage standard semiconductor manufacturing processes. Unlike superconducting quantum computers that require near-absolute-zero temperatures and bespoke infrastructure, Diraq's system integrates into existing data centre environments like any other rack.
The company, which is backed by the National Reconstruction Fund, has been developing its technology at the University of New South Wales. The partnership with Equinix represents a significant step toward commercialising quantum computing at scale.
Australia has emerged as a significant player in the global quantum computing race. PsiQuantum broke ground in June on its facility at Moreton Bay Central, where it will build the world's first utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. Silicon Quantum Computing, led by former Australian of the Year Michelle Simmons, received a $20 million investment from the National Reconstruction Fund in June.
According to the Australian Research Council, the ARC Training Centre for Future Leaders in Quantum Computing launched at the University of Sydney in June, providing $5 million over five years to train the next generation of quantum specialists.
The Equinix announcement confirms the deployment will begin in Sydney, with the system expected to be operational within the coming months.
