The 15.5 km extension adds five stations: Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Hurlstone Park, Canterbury, and Bankstown — converting the T3 Bankstown line to metro standards with driverless trains every 4 minutes peak, 10 minutes off-peak.
Journey time savings vs old T3 line:
"The ridership surge confirms what we modelled but hoped would materialise faster," said Transport for NSW Secretary Josh Murray. "Southwest Sydney has been underserved by rapid transit for decades. The pent-up demand is real."

"We're seeing investor and owner-occupier demand shift toward the corridor," said CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless. "Bankstown and Canterbury are outperforming."
The extension puts 380,000 additional jobs within 45 minutes of Bankstown (vs 290,000 previously), including CBD, North Sydney, Macquarie Park, and Sydney Olympic Park.
Transdev and Transit Systems rerouted 18 bus routes to feed metro stations. Key changes:
| Issue | Status | Workaround | |-------|--------|------------| | Peak crowding Bankstown-Canterbury (7:30-8:15am) | Monitored | Board at Canterbury (less crowded) or take 900 bus | | Lift congestion Bankstown (peak) | Monitoring | Use stairs/escalators where possible | | Opal reader timeout (contactless) | Patch deployed Oct 9 | Use physical Opal card |

Planning is underway for Stage 2: Bankstown to Liverpool (12 km, 4 stations: Milperra, Moorebank, Casula, Liverpool). Environmental assessment underway; construction target 2028-2032.
"Bankstown was the proof of concept. Liverpool is the game-changer for Western Sydney," said NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen.
