Complete guide to claiming the NSW energy bill rebate in 2026, including eligibility criteria, how to apply through Service NSW, and what to expect

The NSW Government provides several forms of energy bill relief to eligible households. The Low Income Household Rebate provides $150 per year to households that receive a concession card, including the Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, or Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card. The Family Energy Rebate provides $180 per year to families with children under 18 who receive Family Tax Benefit. The Medical Energy Rebate provides $150 per year to households with a medical condition requiring additional heating or cooling.
The Energy Bill Relief Fund provides grants of up to $1,000 for households experiencing financial hardship who are unable to pay their energy bills. This fund is administered by Service NSW and is available to households that contact the service and provide evidence of their financial situation.
Visit the Service NSW website and search for "energy rebate" to check your eligibility. You will need to provide your concession card details, income information, and energy account details. The system will automatically determine which rebates you qualify for based on the information you provide.
If you are not on a concession card but are experiencing financial hardship, you may still qualify for the Energy Bill Relief Fund. You will need to provide evidence of your income, energy bills, and financial situation. Service NSW assesses applications on a case-by-case basis.
Log in to your MyServiceNSW account and link your electricity and gas accounts. You will need your energy retailer name, account number, and billing address. Most major retailers including AGL, Origin, EnergyAustralia, and Simply Energy are supported. Linking your account allows Service NSW to verify your energy usage and eligibility automatically.
If you have both electricity and gas accounts, link each one separately. The rebate is applied to each account independently. You must contact your gas retailer separately to apply for the gas rebate even if you have already linked your electricity account.
Navigate to the Service NSW portal and select "Energy Rebates" from the dashboard. Choose the rebate you want to apply for and follow the prompts. You will need to confirm your identity, provide your concession card details if applicable, and confirm your energy account information.
The application process takes approximately five minutes. Service NSW processes most applications within two weeks. Rebates are applied directly to your energy account and are not paid as cash. You will receive a confirmation email once your application is approved.
Some energy retailers offer additional hardship programs beyond the government rebates. Contact your retailer to ask about their hardship program. All NSW energy retailers are required to provide a hardship program that includes payment plans, debt management, and in some cases grants to help customers pay their bills.
The NSW Energy and Water Ombudsman has published a guide to retailer hardship programs. You can access this guide at the NEWA website. If your retailer refuses to provide assistance, you can lodge a complaint with the Ombudsman.
Reducing your energy bill is as much about choosing the right plan as it is about claiming rebates. The Australian Energy Regulator maintains a comparison website at Energy Made Easy. Compare electricity and gas offers in your area and switch to a cheaper plan if possible. Some households save $300 to $500 per year by switching retailers.
Solar households can also save money by installing a battery or joining a virtual power plant. A battery allows you to store electricity generated during the day and use it at night when prices are higher. A virtual power plant allows you to sell excess electricity to the grid during peak periods and receive a payment.
If you are struggling to pay your energy bills, do not ignore the problem. Contact your retailer as soon as possible to discuss payment options. Most retailers have hardship programs that can help. If you are at risk of disconnection, the Energy Bill Relief Fund may be able to provide emergency assistance. Call Service NSW on 13 77 88 or visit a Service NSW centre for help.
