The NSW Government has confirmed the second stage of the Parramatta Light Rail will extend the tram network from Westmead through to the Sydney CBD, creating a continuous 12-kilometre transit corridor across western Sydney.
Transport for NSW released the updated route map last week, showing the extension running through Cammeray, North Sydney, and into the CBD via a new tunnel beneath the harbour foreshore. The project is expected to carry 45,000 passengers daily upon completion.
The first stage, which opened in December 2024, connected Carlingford to Westmead through Parramatta. Since launching, ridership has exceeded projections by 18 per cent, according to the latest Transport for NSW quarterly report.
The extension addresses one of the most significant transit gaps in Sydney's western corridor. Commuters travelling from Parramatta to the CBD currently face a 45-minute journey combining bus and rail transfers. The light rail will reduce this to approximately 25 minutes.
Construction will begin in early 2027, with an estimated completion date of mid-2030. The project budget sits at $3.2 billion, funded through the NSW Infrastructure Pipeline and a federal grant from the Urban Rail Fund.
The new route will include eight stations, with interchange points at Parramatta Square, Cammeray, and Luna Park. Each station will feature level boarding, real-time departure information, and integrated fare gates compatible with the Opal card system.
The expansion is expected to catalyse significant development along the corridor. The Parramatta Local Environmental Plan already designates the light rail alignment as a priority growth area, with zoning changes permitting higher-density residential towers within 800 metres of each station.
Property analysts at CoreLogic estimate that residential values within 500 metres of the new stations could rise by 12 to 15 per cent over the construction period. The City of Sydney has flagged 14 precincts for rezoning to accommodate the projected population increase.
"The light rail is not just a transport project, it is the backbone of western Sydney's urban renewal strategy," said a Transport for NSW spokesperson.
The Parramatta Light Rail will connect to the Sydney Metro at several interchange points, creating a multi-modal network that spans from the western suburbs to the northern corridor. The Sydney Metro City & Southwest line, scheduled to open in 2028, will provide a direct link from Chatswood to Bankstown.
Transport for NSW has confirmed that integrated ticketing will allow passengers to transfer between the light rail and metro without additional fare calculations. The system will use the existing Opal infrastructure, with contactless payment available across all modes.
The western Sydney airport rail link, currently under construction as part of the Western Sydney Airport project, will further extend the network's reach. When completed, passengers will be able to travel from Parramatta to the new airport in approximately 35 minutes.
The first stage of the Parramatta Light Rail has already demonstrated the transformative potential of the network. Daily ridership has grown from 22,000 in the first month of operation to over 35,000 in August 2026.
Stage Two will introduce larger trams capable of carrying 300 passengers each, compared to the 220-seat vehicles currently running on the initial route. The new fleet will feature air conditioning, USB charging ports, and real-time accessibility sensors.
The NSW Government has committed $150 million to station accessibility upgrades, ensuring all eight new stops meet Disability Discrimination Act standards. Construction will proceed in phases, with the Westmead to Parramatta segment scheduled to open first in late 2029.
According to the Transport for NSW project summary, the full network will deliver a 40 per cent reduction in CBD-bound commute times from western Sydney suburbs.
