Sydney's major infrastructure projects are progressing through September 2026, with the airport, metro, and road works advancing on schedule. The combined investment represents the largest transport build-out in the city's history.
Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport is now seven weeks from its opening on 25 October. Jetstar will launch the first passenger services to the Gold Coast, followed by Air New Zealand flights to Auckland on 26 October and Singapore Airlines daily services to Singapore on 23 November. The airport will become Sydney's designated facility for overnight freight movements from 1 November under the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995.
The airport has created more than 12,800 jobs during the construction phase, with roughly half of those positions going to local workers. More than $500 million has been invested in 360 Western Sydney businesses during construction.
The Sydney Metro City Southwest extension will begin driverless train trial runs in October 2026, with passenger services targeted for mid-2027. The extension adds 12 stations and 26 kilometres of track, creating a continuous driverless service from Tallawong to Bankstown. The tunnel between Chatswood and Sydenham passes beneath the Sydney CBD, Eastern Suburbs, and Inner West.
The Fifteenth Avenue Upgrade, a $1.0 billion project between Liverpool and the airport, is in its final stages of construction. The upgrade provides a direct motorway connection from the M7 to the airport terminal. The NSW Budget has allocated $5.5 billion for Western Sydney roads.
The Parramatta Light Rail expansion is progressing, and the Sydney Metro West line is on track for its scheduled opening. The combined investment in transport infrastructure represents the largest build-out in Sydney's history.
