Sydney's newest waterfront swimming destination has opened at Rozelle Bay, giving residents a rare opportunity to swim in filtered ocean water with direct harbour views. The floating pool, positioned on the waters of Rozelle Bay, represents one of the most significant public amenity additions to the Inner West in years.

The structure sits moored near the Bays Precinct, an area undergoing extensive transformation under the Bays Precinct Urban Renewal Strategy. The pool draws seawater directly from Sydney Harbour, filtering it through a state-of-the-art system before circulating it through the swimming area. Unlike traditional harbour swimming spots, the enclosed floating pool offers controlled conditions while maintaining the open-water experience.

Design and engineering specifications

The floating pool spans approximately 25 metres in length and features a deep-end section reaching 3.5 metres. Engineers from the Bays Precinct Delivery Authority designed the platform to withstand Sydney Harbour's tidal movements and prevailing winds. The structure uses reinforced concrete pontoons anchored to the seabed, with the deck constructed from sustainable timber sourced from certified Australian forests.

Water quality monitoring occurs continuously, with sensors tracking salinity, pH levels, and bacterial counts in real time. The filtration system processes the entire water volume every six hours. According to the Bays Precinct Delivery Authority, the pool meets NSW Health swimming pool standards throughout the operating season.

Access and transport connections

The Rozelle Bay location benefits from excellent transport links. Sydney Ferries operate regular services to nearby Pyrmont Bay, with a short walk to the pool. The Inner West Light Rail provides direct access from the CBD, and multiple bus routes serve the surrounding streets. The project forms part of a broader transport integration plan overseen by Transport for NSW, which has upgraded pedestrian pathways and cycling connections around the Bays Precinct.

Local residents have welcomed the addition. The pool operates seasonally from October through March, with extended hours during school holidays. Entry fees remain modest, with concessions available for concession card holders and families.
