The GWS Giants have secured an elimination final berth after a remarkable season that defied pre-season expectations. The club, based in western Sydney, finished inside the top eight and will contest a sudden-death match this weekend with a place in the semi-finals on the line.
The Giants' turnaround has been one of the stories of the 2026 AFL season. After several years of rebuilding and inconsistent results, the club has found a winning formula under coach Bruce Southern. The combination of a strong forward line, a disciplined midfield, and a growing culture of accountability has produced results that surprised even the club's most optimistic supporters.
The Giants' path to the finals was far from smooth. The club endured a mid-season slump that saw them drop below the top eight, but a run of four consecutive wins in August propelled them into the final eight. The turnaround was built on improved defensive structures and a willingness to play direct, contested football.
The elimination final will be the club's first finals match since 2019. The pressure on the players will be significant, but the Giants have shown resilience throughout the season. The club's home ground, GIANTS Stadium in western Sydney, has been a fortress during the season, and the team will look to carry that advantage into the finals.
The Giants' forward line has been the standout feature of their season. Several players have kicked career-best goal tallies, and the club's ability to score from contested situations has improved dramatically. The midfield has also strengthened, with younger players stepping up to fill gaps left by departing veterans.
The elimination final is a winner-takes-all affair. The Giants will need to be at their best to overcome a quality opponent. The club's depth has been tested throughout the season, and the coaching staff will need to make astute selections to give the team the best chance of progressing to the semi-finals.
The Giants' finals appearance is a significant moment for AFL in western Sydney. The club has worked tirelessly to grow the game in the region, and the finals berth has generated enormous excitement among the local community. The club's junior participation numbers have grown significantly, and the Giants' success on the field has provided a powerful incentive for young players in the western suburbs.
The elimination final represents the club's best chance in years to make a deep finals run. The task is daunting, but the Giants have earned their place and will be backed by a passionate home crowd.
