The Sydney Harbour Bridge cycle path opened to cyclists on Monday, completing a decades-long campaign by cycling advocates to provide a safe crossing of the iconic structure. The 2.4-kilometre separated path runs from Cumberland Street in the CBD to the northern end of the bridge, offering uninterrupted views of the harbour and the Opera House.
Transport for NSW confirmed the path operates from 6am to 10pm daily. Cyclists share the pathway with pedestrians during peak hours, with designated cycling lanes marked by painted surfaces and protective kerbs. The speed limit for cyclists is 20 kilometres per hour.
The cycle path was built as part of the Harbour Bridge Maintenance Program, which has been running since 2022. Engineers from Transport for NSW installed a dedicated 2.5-metre-wide pathway on the western side of the bridge, separated from vehicular traffic by a concrete barrier. The design accommodates both cyclists and pedestrians, with wider sections at the midpoint for resting.
The project cost $14 million and was funded through the NSW Government's Active Transport Infrastructure Fund. The path features integrated lighting, emergency call points, and real-time occupancy sensors that display crowd density on digital signage at both ends.
The opening of the Harbour Bridge cycle path completes a continuous 12-kilometre cycling route from Pyrmont to the North Shore. Cyclists can now travel from the CBD to the Eastern Suburbs without sharing road space with motor vehicles. Bicycle Network estimates the path will attract 3,000 additional daily cyclists.
The path connects to the existing Bay Run and the Parramatta River cycle path, creating a comprehensive network for recreational and commuter cyclists. According to Transport for NSW, the bridge path is expected to reduce cycling injuries on the adjacent road corridor by up to 40 per cent.
Heavy vehicles, motorcycles, and motorised scooters are prohibited from the cycle path. E-bikes are permitted but must operate in pedal-assist mode only. The path is closed during extreme weather events and during the New Year's Eve fireworks display.
