The Sydney Metro Eastern Suburbs extension has reached a critical construction milestone, with tunnel boring completed between Bondi Junction and the new Maroubra Junction station. The project, overseen by Transport for NSW, will extend heavy rail access deeper into Sydney's eastern suburbs.
The extension adds three new stations along the existing corridor, connecting commuters from the CBD directly to Maroubra Junction without requiring a change at Bondi Junction. The new stations are designed to integrate with existing bus networks and the CBD and South East Light Rail interchange.
Tunnel boring machines commenced work in early 2025, navigating through sandstone formations beneath the eastern suburbs. The tunnelling phase concluded ahead of schedule, with the final breakthrough recorded at Maroubra Junction last week. Overhead line equipment installation is now underway across the 4.2-kilometre extension.
Transport for NSW has confirmed the project remains on track for a 2028 opening. The agency has allocated $2.3 billion for the extension, which includes station upgrades at Bondi Junction and new accessibility features across all three stops. According to the transport agency, daily ridership is projected to reach 45,000 passengers by 2030.
The extension addresses long-standing connectivity gaps in Sydney's eastern suburbs. Residents in Maroubra, Kingsford, and surrounding areas currently rely heavily on bus services into the CBD, with average commute times exceeding 50 minutes during peak periods. The new rail link is expected to reduce average commute times by approximately 20 minutes.
