The NSW Government has released detailed designs for the Sydney Metro West Bays Precinct station, showing a new ferry interchange, 200-metre-long platforms, and direct connections to the White Bay Power Station redevelopment. The station will sit approximately 25 metres below ground in the Bays Precinct, with a street-level entrance on the foreshore and an underground connection to the proposed ferry terminal.
The Bays Precinct station is the only Sydney Metro West station to include a ferry interchange, with the NSW Government planning a new wharf on Rozelle Bay to connect metro services with the Inner West ferry network. The ferry terminal will include two berths, with services connecting to Barangaroo, McMahons Point, and Parramatta. The metro station will also include a bus interchange on the foreshore, with services connecting to the Inner West and North Shore.
The Bays Precinct station forms part of the Bays to CBD package, which covers twin tunnels between The Bays and Hunter Street, station boxes at The Bays and Hunter Street, and a crossover cavern at Hunter Street large enough to store a 120-metre-long driverless train. The joint venture of John Holland, CPB Contractors and Ghella is responsible for the package, with tunnelling between The Bays and Hunter Street now complete.
The station box at The Bays will include two island platforms, four tracks, and a cross-platform interchange allowing passengers to transfer between metro and ferry services. The platforms are 200 metres long, accommodating the full six-car metro train configuration. The station will also include a retail concourse on the lower ground floor, with shops, cafes, and community facilities.
The tunnel between The Bays and Hunter Street passes beneath the Rozelle Bay foreshore, the Glebe Island Bridge, and the Sydney CBD’s commercial core. Ground movement monitoring was maintained throughout the drive, with settlement thresholds kept below agreed limits for the Glebe Island Bridge and heritage buildings in the Rozelle precinct.
The Bays Precinct station will provide direct access to the White Bay Power Station redevelopment, which is being delivered by the NSW Government through the Sydney Metro Authority. The power station is being redeveloped as a mixed-use precinct, with commercial, residential, and community facilities. The metro station will include a dedicated pedestrian link to the power station site, with the entrance located on the foreshore promenade.
The White Bay Power Station is a heritage-listed building, with the redevelopment preserving the original turbine hall, boiler house, and chimney. The precinct will include approximately 10,000 square metres of commercial floor space, 200 residential apartments, and a public plaza on the foreshore. The metro station will provide direct access to the precinct, with journey times from the CBD reduced to approximately 5 minutes.
The redevelopment of the White Bay Power Station is part of the broader Bays Precinct urban renewal program, which will deliver approximately 16,000 new homes and 40,000 new jobs by 2036. The Bays Precinct is one of the largest urban renewal projects in Sydney, with the NSW Government investing more than $10 billion in infrastructure and transport.
The Bays Precinct station site is located in an industrial and recreational area of Rozelle, with construction activities impacting the foreshore and nearby residential areas. The joint venture manages construction impacts on the foreshore, including sediment control, water quality monitoring, and noise mitigation for nearby residents. The White Bay Power Station site is adjacent to the Rozelle Bay Wetlands, and the construction program includes environmental offsets to protect the wetlands from construction impacts.
The completion of tunnelling does not end construction disruption in the Bays Precinct. The station site will continue fit-out and systems installation works through 2027 and 2028, with the metro station targeting a 2032 opening as part of the full Sydney Metro West line.
