Royal Easter Show returns with a twilight program

The Royal Easter Show returns to Sydney Olympic Park next spring with the largest expansion of its footprint since the post-pandemic rebuild, and with a genuinely new idea attached to it: a twilight program that keeps the show open until 10:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays rather than closing in the afternoon.

Figures released in the show's published event program, which The Sydney Times has reviewed, put the 2027 edition at 14 days against 12, with more than 180,000 square metres of indoor exhibition space compared with roughly 155,000 square metres in the last edition. Attendance across the previous run was just over 1.42 million, and organisers have modelled the longer hours as the primary driver of a target of 1.6 million.

What the twilight program actually changes

The evening program is built around three anchors. A main arena show runs three times nightly in the outdoor amphitheatre. A new food and beverage precinct along the eastern promenade extends to nine venues, six of them licensed for alcohol service until the close of the twilight window. And a silent disco-style children's zone operates in the western pavilion, closing at 8:30pm.

That third element is the one organisers say they are most confident about. Daytime show traffic skews heavily to families with children under eight, and keeping the under-twelve programming inside daylight hours while moving the licensed and live-music elements into the evening is intended to let families leave earlier without losing total attendance.

Getting there

Olympic Park station will run extended services on show days, and the show has retained an arrangement with the nearby multi-storey car park operators for on-site parking. The main pedestrian route from the station along Olympic Park Avenue has been widened after crowd modelling flagged a pinch point near the eastern gate.

The show has also extended its free shuttle loop between the station, the car park and the northern pavilion entrances, a service it has run since 2023. Public transport is expected to carry roughly 78 per cent of visitors, consistent with the previous edition.

Where the new floor space goes

The expansion is concentrated in two directions. A new pavilion has been built at the northern end, which will house agricultural and regional show content that previously overflowed into temporary marquees. The second area is the western pavilion, converted from storage space, which will take the expanded home, living and lifestyle offering.

The show's education program, which has been running for more than two decades, will expand its weekday capacity under the longer footprint. Published program documents list school group bookings across the full two-week window, with the quietest attendance days falling in the second week.

What families should plan around

Timetables published in the program put the main arena show at 11:20am, 1:40pm and 7:30pm on weekends, with the 7:30pm edition running 95 minutes and closing the twilight program. Parking pre-booking opened in August and showgrounds administration has said it will not guarantee same-day spaces.

The show remains the largest public event on the Sydney calendar outside the New Year fireworks, and the longer hours are the first structural change to its daily pattern in more than a decade.

The practical changes families will feel

Three smaller changes are worth noting, all of them published in the event program. Showbags become available for collection the week before opening, removing the pre-dawn queue that has historically formed outside the main gate. Cashless entry moves to a mixed model, with card and contactless accepted at all gates but a capped cash lane retained at the eastern entrance.

The other is shuttle frequency. The on-site loop has been re-timed around the twilight program so that the final circuit runs every fifteen minutes after 9pm rather than every thirty, which is the difference between the new hours being usable by families without a car and being usable by nobody.

Crowd safety planning has been revised for the extended schedule, with stewarding coverage extended across the full operating window and an additional first-aid post opened near the amphitheatre entrance. Showgrounds administration has said the quietest days will remain the second week, and has published a recommendation that visitors planning a full day arrive after 11am.
