The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race enters its final preparation phase ahead of the December 26 start from Sydney Harbour. Organisers have confirmed a record entry list of 112 entries, surpassing the previous year's 98 boats. The 628-nautical-mile race from Rose Bay to Hobart remains the premier offshore sailing event in the Southern Hemisphere.
Race management has introduced updated weather routing protocols this year, incorporating real-time satellite data to provide crews with more accurate storm prediction. The changes follow a review of the 2025 edition, where two vessels sustained mast damage in heavy seas south of Eden.
The entry list includes several superyachts exceeding 100 feet, alongside a strong contingent of offshore racing yachts. The defending overall winner, a German-flagged maxi yacht, is expected to face stiff competition from Australian naval architects who have designed new canting keel platforms.
According to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, entry fees have increased by 8 per cent to cover the upgraded race management infrastructure. The club has also expanded the rescue vessel fleet, adding two new fast response craft stationed along the route.
The race course spans from Rose Bay through the Tasman Sea, past Cape Howe, along the Victorian coast, and into the Derwent River. Historical weather data indicates a 65 per cent probability of moderate conditions on race day, though southern lows can develop rapidly in the Bass Strait.
