Sydney Today: Five Things Happening in the City on September 15

Sydney is in the middle of one of its busiest stretches of the year. Vivid Sydney is running across the CBD, the Western Sydney Airport is seven weeks from its first passenger flight, and the Reserve Bank is days away from its rate decision. Here is what is happening in the city today.

Vivid Sydney installations light up the harbour

Vivid Sydney 2026 continues to transform the CBD and harbour precincts with hundreds of light installations. The Sydney Harbour Bridge remains the centrepiece, with LED displays visible from across the harbour. The Barangaroo foreshore hosts a dedicated outdoor gallery featuring large-scale projections, and a new generative light piece by Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda illuminates the Cahill Expressway pylons at Circular Quay. The festival runs through June across multiple venues.

Western Sydney Airport enters final countdown

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport is now seven weeks from its opening on 25 October. Jetstar will launch the first passenger services to the Gold Coast, followed by Air New Zealand flights to Auckland on 26 October and Singapore Airlines daily services to Singapore on 23 November. The airport will become Sydney's designated facility for overnight freight movements from 1 November under the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995.

Sydney Metro City Southwest trial runs begin

Sydney Metro City Southwest will begin driverless train trial runs in October 2026, with passenger services targeted for mid-2027. The extension adds 12 stations and 26 kilometres of track, creating a continuous driverless service from Tallawong to Bankstown. The trial programme will validate signalling, platform screen doors, and passenger information systems on the new track between Sydenham and Bankstown.

RBA rate decision looms

The Reserve Bank of Australia will announce its September rate decision on 29 September. Financial markets are pricing a 25 basis point increase to 4.85 percent, which would add approximately $120 to monthly repayments on a $750,000 mortgage. Australia's 3-year government bond yield has climbed above 5 percent, its highest level in 15 years, adding pressure on the major banks to pass costs to borrowers.

Sydney housing market shows strain

Sydney residential auction clearance rates have softened in recent weeks, particularly in the eastern suburbs. The city's median dwelling price sits near $1.1 million, and mortgage servicing costs continue to climb. The NSW Government has allocated $5.5 billion for Western Sydney roads, including $1.0 billion for the first stage of the Fifteenth Avenue Upgrade between Liverpool and the new airport.
