Western Sydney Airport: Traveler Guide October 2026

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport will welcome its first passengers on 25 October 2026. The airport is now seven weeks from opening, and travelers planning to use the new facility need to know what to expect.

First flights and airline schedule

Jetstar will operate the inaugural passenger flights, with services to the Gold Coast starting on 25 October. The airline will also run regular flights to Melbourne and Brisbane. Air New Zealand begins flights to Auckland on 26 October, and Singapore Airlines will start daily services to Singapore on 23 November. Qantas Freight will begin regular cargo services from 27 July, ahead of the passenger launch.

From 1 November 2026, Western Sydney International is intended to become Sydney's airport for overnight freight movements, in line with arrangements under the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995. This means the airport will handle overnight cargo operations that are currently restricted at Kingsford Smith Airport.

Getting to the airport

Transport for NSW has confirmed that road access will be the primary mode of transport at launch. The Fifteenth Avenue Upgrade, a $1.0 billion project between Liverpool and the airport, is in its final stages of construction. The upgrade provides a direct motorway connection from the M7 to the airport terminal.

The future Sydney Metro Airport connection will provide rapid rail access to the CBD, but this service is not expected to be operational until after the airport's opening. Travelers should plan for road transport in the first months of operation. Taxi and rideshare services will be available at the terminal, and parking facilities will open with the airport.

Terminal facilities and access

The Nancy-Bird Walton terminal will open with check-in, security, and baggage handling facilities. The terminal is designed to handle international and domestic passengers, with Singapore Airlines operating the first international services from 23 November. The airport has allocated more than $500 million in investment toward 360 Western Sydney businesses during construction, and the terminal reflects that investment in its passenger amenities.

The airport has created more than 12,800 jobs during the construction phase, with roughly half of those positions going to local workers. The project represents a major part of the government's investment in Western Sydney, which includes road upgrades and future rail connections.

What to expect on opening day

The airport will begin with a limited schedule of flights, expanding over the coming months as additional airlines confirm services. Travelers should expect some operational adjustments during the first weeks as the airport establishes its routines.
