Vivid Sydney 2026 opens across Circular Quay, the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and the CBD this week, bringing 90 light installations and large-scale projections from artists across five continents to Australia's largest winter festival of light, music and ideas.
The festival's signature light walk returns, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and Customs House among the landmarks transformed by animated projections. This year's program features installations from artists in Australia, Japan, France, South Korea and the United States, exploring themes of climate, technology and First Nations knowledge.
The Opera House sails will showcase a new projection created by a First Nations-led creative collective, weaving traditional storytelling with contemporary digital techniques. The Harbour Bridge will be illuminated by a geometric light sequence designed to highlight the structure's iconic archways.
Beyond the harbourfront, the festival extends through the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, where 12 new installations have been created specifically for the gardens. Visitors can walk through illuminated canopies, interact with sound-responsive light sculptures and explore plant-themed projections inspired by the garden's living collection.
Martin Place and Pitt Street Mall will host a series of interactive installations, with some works responding to movement and sound from festival-goers. The festival also includes a dedicated family zone with hands-on light activities designed for younger visitors.
Vivid LIVE returns with a lineup of international and Australian performers across venues including the Sydney Opera House and Carriageworks. The Vivid Ideas program features talks, workshops and panel discussions on topics ranging from AI and creativity to urban design and sustainability.
This year's Ideas program includes sessions with leading Australian and international thinkers, with free events held at venues across the CBD. Many of the talks will focus on the intersection of technology, art and climate action.
With large crowds expected, Transport for NSW is running additional train, ferry and light rail services throughout the festival period. Circular Quay station will be busy at peak times, with festival organisers encouraging visitors to walk between precincts or use public transport.
The festival runs for 23 nights, with peak crowds expected on weekends. Organisers recommend booking Vivid LIVE tickets in advance and arriving early for popular installations. For those with accessibility needs, a dedicated accessibility map highlights step-free routes and accessible viewing areas.
Vivid Sydney generates significant economic benefits for the city, attracting visitors from interstate and overseas. Destination NSW estimates the festival contributes more than $140 million to the NSW economy each year, supporting jobs across hospitality, retail and the creative industries.
Now in its 16th year, the festival continues to cement Sydney's reputation as a global creative city. The light walk is free to the public, with paid tickets required for selected Vivid LIVE and Vivid Ideas events.
