The Biennale of Sydney has opened a major new gallery on Cockatoo Island, transforming the historic industrial site into a premier contemporary art venue. The exhibition features works from over forty Australian and international artists, marking the largest civic art event of the year.
Cockatoo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site formerly used as a penal establishment and shipyard, now hosts a growing arts program. The new gallery space occupies a restored sandstone building on the island's eastern shore, offering 800 square metres of exhibition area with harbour views.
The 2026 edition, titled "Tides of Change", explores themes of environmental transformation and cultural resilience. Works range from large-scale installations addressing climate change to intimate paintings documenting Sydney's evolving coastline. The exhibition runs through to December and is free to the public.
Featured artists include Abdul Abdullah, whose photographic series examines colonial legacies, and international sculptor Daan Roosegaarde, whose fog machine installation responds to Sydney's coastal weather patterns. Ferries depart from Circular Quay every thirty minutes, with a journey time of twenty-five minutes. The island is accessible year-round, and the gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm. According to Destination NSW, Cockatoo Island attracted over 200,000 visitors in the past financial year.
