Sydney Eat & Drink: Best Restaurants December
Sydney's best restaurants are thriving with festive menus and new openings. The December dining scene is alive with seasonal specials, holiday tasting
Thirty Sydney lunches under $15 across the inner west, north shore and western suburbs, with prices, queue times and the best day to visit each spot.

Dining Desk is a contributing writer covering eat-drink and public affairs for The Sydney Times.
We ate lunch at thirty Sydney spots that charge $15 or less for a main course, from a Marrickville bakery counter to a suburban boilermaker in Fairfield. These Sydney cheap eats are the ones worth the walk, the wait, or both.
Every venue was visited between 12.15pm and 1.15pm on a weekday, a Wednesday where possible. Prices are the regular weekday price excluding public holidays, and every venue below charges $15 or less for a main meal that includes a drink or a side.
We deliberately excluded venues that are only cheap because they are small. Two excellent counters were dropped because the seating is a single bench and a takeaway-only operation is not really a lunch.
Kiosk 47, Marrickville — A Vietnamese bánh mì and rice roll counter in a former tyre shop. The pork roll is $13.50 and comes with a pot of chilli vinegar that is stronger than it looks. It sells out of the pork roll around 12.45pm on Wednesdays. Cash and card, no bookings. Six seats, and three of them are taken by people working from the workshop next door.
Ferry Stop, Newtown — A fish and chips counter doing a $14.50 house special that changes weekly. Expect a fifteen-minute queue at peak and a hard stop when the batter is gone. The separate noodle room next door is a different business and takes card only.
Tasting Room 9, Stanmore — Twelve seats, one set lunch menu at $14 for two courses, changed on Mondays. It is the best value in the eastern suburbs if you can book. Booking opens on the previous Friday at 9am.
Barrio Comida, Marrickville — A $12.50 lunch plate that includes a side of bread. The kitchen runs from 12pm to 2.30pm and stops when they sell out, which on Fridays is around 12.20pm.
Dumplings on Lane 3, Chatswood — Hand-folded pork and chive dumplings at $4.50 for six, which makes a three-basket lunch $13.50. Bright, fast, and the best-value sit-down option in Chatswood's lane network.
Canteen Nine, Sydney CBD — A basement canteen serving a single hot plate for $13.90 with bread and a drink. Twelve hundred lunches a day, cash-heavy, and the seating is communal. Go at 11.30am or after 1.45pm.
Grill House, Willoughby — A takeaway-only counter that has been turning out a $14.50 chicken and rice plate since 2019. The queue is mostly office workers between 12.15 and 12.45. No card surcharge above $20.
The Kiosk, Bondi Junction — Counter service at the western end of the mall, $14 for a plate and a coffee. Seating is upstairs and rarely busy. Ten minutes from the train.
Boilermaker 8, Fairfield — A genuine old-school boilermaker with a $13.90 mixed grill plate that includes a fried egg and chips. Cash only at the counter. Closes when the chips finish, which is early on Sundays.
Paradel, Fairfield West — Lebanese, $14 for a mixed grill with garlic sauce and rice, available from 11am. Eat in or takeaway, and the mixed plate is better than any individual item.
Punjab Kitchen, Punchbowl — A $12.50 thali with two curries and a roti, refilled once. Open Monday to Saturday from 11am. The closest thing to a sit-down lunch under $15 in the west.
Miso & Rice, Strathfield — Japanese, $13 for a rice bowl with two sides. Excellent value and very fast, averaging eight minutes from order to table.
Several very cheap places were excluded for thin margins — a $9 lunch that arrived cold, a counter where the entire menu was deep-fried, and a suburban takeaway with a genuinely good sandwich but a three-week wait for delivery slots.
The lesson from thirty lunches is that the cheapest option is rarely the best one. Twelve of the thirty were decent. Thirty was the number of places locals insisted we try, and they were right about most of them.
