Sydney Festival 2027 program announced with 120 events across the CBD and Parramatta

Sydney Festival has confirmed that its 2027 program will run from Friday 6 January to Sunday 25 January, spanning 20 days with more than 120 events across the Sydney CBD, inner city and Parramatta. The full program will be released in October 2026, but the festival's organisers have previewed the opening night concert, the free community events and the inaugural Parramatta precinct program, which will be the largest regional expansion in the festival's recent history.

The festival's artistic director, Olivia Ansell, said the 2027 edition would focus on artists based in the Asia-Pacific region, with a program that includes music, theatre, dance, visual art and interdisciplinary performance. The Asia-Pacific focus reflects a deliberate shift away from the Eurocentric programming that characterised earlier Sydney Festivals, and it aligns with the demographic reality of a city where more than 40 percent of residents were born overseas.

The opening night concert

The opening night concert will take place at the Sydney Opera House forecourt on Friday 6 January, with free entry and a program that combines orchestral music, dance and large-scale visual projection. The concert is a collaboration between the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and a dance company from the Asia-Pacific region, with the specific artists to be announced in October. The Opera House forecourt concert is one of the largest free cultural events in Australia each year, and it typically draws more than 50,000 attendees across the night.

Free community events will also run in the Domain and in Hyde Park during the first weekend of the festival. The Domain hosts a family-focused program with live music, street theatre, interactive installations and food stalls, while Hyde Park presents a series of talks and performances by local artists. The City of Sydney provides funding for these free events as part of its broader cultural calendar, and the events are designed to draw residents and tourists into the CBD during the traditionally quiet post-Christmas period.

Parramatta as a second precinct

The 2027 festival will establish Parramatta as a formal second precinct, with events running at the Riverside Theatres, Parramatta Park and several outdoor locations in the CBD. The expansion is funded by a $5 million grant from the NSW Government's Western Sydney Infrastructure Fund, and it represents the first time that Sydney Festival has presented a program of equivalent scale outside the traditional inner-city venues.

Parramatta Park will host a free opening concert on Sunday 10 January, with a program featuring artists from the Asia-Pacific region performing on a purpose-built stage overlooking the Parramatta River. The park can hold more than 20,000 people, and the event will be supported by additional food stalls, market stalls and family activities running throughout the afternoon. The Riverside Theatres will present ticketed theatre, dance and music events during the second and third weeks of the festival, with programming curated in partnership with local Western Sydney arts organisations.

Ticketing and access

Sydney Festival operates a tiered ticketing system, with free events open to the public and ticketed events ranging from $25 to $150. The festival's website publishes the full program in October, and tickets for high-demand events typically sell out within days of release. Subscribers can join the festival's membership program for priority access to tickets and exclusive events, with membership priced at $60 for individuals and $100 for couples.

Many events are held in venues that are not fully accessible, and the festival's accessibility information is published alongside each event listing on the website. The Opera House forecourt concert, the Domain events and the Parramatta Park concert are all wheelchair accessible, with designated viewing areas and accessible toilet facilities.
