The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia has reopened its permanent collection galleries at Circular Quay following a $15 million refurbishment of its heritage building. The redevelopment has expanded the exhibition space by 30 per cent while preserving the original 1930s art deco façade.
The reopening exhibition features over 200 works from the MCA's collection of more than 4,000 pieces, spanning Australian contemporary art from the 1940s to the present day. Highlights include works by major Australian artists and a new acquisition of Indigenous contemporary works.
The refurbished building includes a new café with harbour views, an expanded bookshop, and improved accessibility throughout the galleries. Admission to the permanent collection remains free, while special exhibitions carry a ticket fee. According to the MCA, annual visitation has averaged 300,000 before the pandemic.
