The architectural design preserves the industrial heritage of the original wool stores while incorporating modern gallery standards including climate-controlled exhibition rooms and flexible gallery spaces.
The inaugural exhibition showcases works by five Australian artists exploring themes of urban identity and environmental change. The programme includes a major installation by a Sydney-based artist occupying the entire ground floor gallery space. According to the gallery's director, the exhibition has already attracted significant visitor interest during its preview period.
The gallery also features a dedicated education wing and a public terrace overlooking the harbour. The Sydney Arts Trust has provided funding support for the gallery's community access programmes.
Walsh Bay is accessible via Sydney Ferries to nearby Pyrmont Bay, with the gallery a short walk from the wharf. The Light Rail also serves the precinct. The gallery is open seven days a week, with free admission on Wednesday evenings.
