Sydney's craft beer landscape is expanding rapidly, with at least six new breweries opening across the city this year. The wave of openings spans from the inner west's industrial precincts to purpose-built taprooms in the CBD, reflecting growing consumer demand for locally brewed, experimental styles.
In Marrickville, a former warehouse has been converted into a 30-hectolitre brewhouse specialising in Australian-style IPAs and sour ales. The venue, which opened last month, offers floor-to-ceiling tasting room windows overlooking the brewing floor. According to the owners, the brewery sources malt from Victorian maltsters and hops from Tasmania.
The CBD has welcomed two new brewpubs this year, both focusing on session-strength beers designed for the lunchtime crowd. A Surry Hills establishment is pouring a rotating selection of NSW-brewed lagers, while a Pyrmont venue specialises in barrel-aged stouts aged in local whisky casks.
The New South Wales Brewers Association reports that the state now has over 120 active breweries, up from 98 two years ago. Production volume has grown by 22 per cent annually, driven by consumer preference for locally produced beverages over mass-market alternatives.
Beyond the metropolitan area, regional breweries are gaining prominence. A new facility in Wollongong is producing a coastal IPA brewed with wild yeast harvested from the Illawarra region. The brewery has already secured distribution across major Sydney bottle shops.
