The Sydney Festival 2027 programme is being curated to showcase the best in contemporary and traditional arts, featuring international and local talent.
Christmas in Sydney 2026 centres on Carols in the Domain on 19 December, plus The Rocks Christmas markets, harbour events and long summer evenings.

Christmas in Sydney 2026 has its anchor date. The Salvation Army's Carols in the Domain returns to the Domain on Saturday 19 December, the 44th edition of the free open-air carol night that its organisers call Australia's largest Christmas event. Around it sit the rest of the season: The Rocks markets trading every weekend on George Street, daylight saving stretching evenings to about 8pm, and the harbour fireworks on 31 December. Several 2026 programs remain unpublished, so this guide separates the confirmed dates from the fixtures still to be announced. Christmas in Australia falls in mid-summer, which shapes the whole calendar: open-air carols, daylight markets and harbour picnics rather than indoor concerts.
Carols in the Domain 2026 is on Saturday 19 December in the Domain. Free pre-show festivities run from 1pm, the main carol program starts at 7:15pm, and Nine broadcasts the show live on Channel 9 and 9Now from 7:30pm. Entry to the non-ticketed Festive Lawn is free.
The 2026 edition marks a broadcast shift. Nine takes over the telecast from Seven, which carried the 2025 show, with A Current Affair host Ally Langdon and 9News presenter James Bracey set to host. The Salvation Army returns as naming partner for a second year, having been involved since Robyn Hobbs founded the event in 1983. Tickets have been on sale since Thursday 23 April through the Carols in the Domain official site, with children aged two and under free and interest-free Sleigh-Buy payment plans on offer. The 2025 edition was held on Saturday 20 December.
The Domain setting suits the format. Audiences spread across the lawn for the pre-show, with food and drink stalls, family activities and themed activations through the afternoon, then settle in for the sing-along as the light fades. The charitable engine remains the Salvos Candle Bag, priced at $30, with 100 per cent of sales going to frontline homelessness services and more than $3.5 million raised to date. The 2026 performer line-up had not been published as of 11 October.
The Rocks Markets trade every Friday, Saturday and Sunday on George Street, with free entry, and the precinct's December Christmas Edition is the city's signature gift market. The 2025 Christmas Edition ran across three weekends from 5 to 21 December, and the campaign describes handmade gifts from local artisans, festive food and picnics beneath the Harbour Bridge. The last published hours ran from 10am to 3pm on Fridays and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The 2026 Christmas Edition dates had not been published as of 11 October, though the weekly markets will trade regardless.
In the city centre, the Queen Victoria Building's Christmas tree anchors the festive decorations on the same street, a short walk from Town Hall station. The weekend trade at The Rocks sits in the shadow of the Harbour Bridge, with live music and open space at Dawes Point Park alongside the stalls. The City of Sydney's what's on listings add a second market circuit: Martin Place Christmas Markets from 28 November, trading late until Christmas Eve, and Choirs in the City from 1 December, when a different choir sings carols by the Martin Place Christmas tree each night. Santa photos run in Martin Place from 27 November.
NSW daylight saving began on Sunday 4 October and runs until Sunday 4 April 2027, so mid-December sunsets fall around 8pm and harbourside lunches run long. The Domain and the Royal Botanic Garden remain the traditional Christmas picnic grounds, and the Domain hosts the carols themselves, which makes the pair a natural half-day plan: gardens at lunch, carols at dusk. The extended daylight also reshapes the dining calendar. Sydney's long-lunch season runs on the back of those late sunsets, with harbourside tables booking out weeks ahead for December afternoons and many venues trading into the early evening.
The City of Sydney's New Year's Eve fireworks over Sydney Harbour on 31 December close the season. The city's listings also include Christmas party cruises on Sydney Harbour from late November, pairing harbour views with festive dining packages. The 2026-27 fireworks program and precinct access bookings are yet to be announced, with the city typically confirming its summer program in stages. The Bureau of Meteorology declared El Nino in June 2026, and some models suggest it could be among the strongest on record, which points to hotter, drier conditions for outdoor fixtures: pack hats and water for any daytime event.
Getting there is simpler this year. The M1 Metro now runs end to end from Tallawong to Bankstown after opening on 5 October, Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport opens on 25 October, and St James and Museum stations border the Domain while Circular Quay serves The Rocks and the harbour foreshore.
Book Carols in the Domain seating first. Premium reserved, chair and beach chair categories have been on sale since April, spanning the Dasher, Cupid, Prancer, Rudolph, Blitzen and Comet sections, with the TinselTown reserved lawn completing the options. The free Festive Lawn fills early on the night. Christmas Day lunches in top harbourside rooms typically sell out by early December, and New Year's Eve precinct access moves faster still once the City of Sydney opens bookings.
The summer calendar beyond Christmas is already taking shape, with Sydney Festival 2027's 120-event program running from 6 January across the CBD and Parramatta. For the spring lead-up, our roundup of Sydney's best cultural events in October covers what is on now, and the Culture & Escapes hub and festivals hub track the rest of the season. Full listings sit with the City of Sydney Christmas program and the Destination NSW events calendar.
