The Rise of Neighbourhood Dining in the Inner West

Sydney's Inner West has become the city's most dynamic dining corridor over the past five years. The area stretches from Rozelle in the north to Tempe in the south and includes the suburbs of Balmain, Birchgrove, Annandale, Leichhardt, Petersham, Marrickville, and Newtown. The defining characteristic of Inner West dining is the emphasis on casual, neighbourhood-focused restaurants that offer high-quality food at reasonable prices. Many of the best restaurants in the area are located in converted terrace houses, warehouses, and corner shops.

The Restaurants to Visit

Rasa in Marrickville is a 30-seat restaurant that serves modern Indian cooking. Chef Ragini婶 is originally from Kerala and has developed a menu that combines traditional Indian flavours with local Australian produce. The Kerala fish curry with coconut milk and rice is the signature dish. The price is $28. The restaurant also serves a range of Indian breads including naan and paratha for $6.

Mister Georgie in Newtown is a 40-seat restaurant that serves modern Greek cooking. Chef George Georgiou is originally from Melbourne and has developed a menu that combines traditional Greek flavours with modern techniques. The grilled octopus with lemon and olive oil is the signature dish. The price is $26. The restaurant also serves a range of Greek wines by the glass from $12.

Pasta e Basta in Leichhardt is a 35-seat restaurant that serves handmade pasta. Chef Marco Rossi is originally from Rome and has developed a menu that includes 12 different pasta dishes that change daily. The cacio e pepe is the signature dish. The price is $24. The restaurant also serves a range of Italian wines by the glass from $10.

The Copper Pot in Balmain is a 40-seat restaurant that serves modern Australian cooking. Chef Sarah O'Connor is originally from Sydney and has developed a menu that focuses on seasonal produce from the Central Coast and the Southern Highlands. The wood-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic is the signature dish. The price is $32. The restaurant also serves a range of Australian wines by the glass from $12.

Banh Mi Thang in Newtown is a 20-seat shop that serves Vietnamese banh mi and other Vietnamese street food. The banh mi with pork, pate, and pickled vegetables is the signature dish. The price is $13. The shop also serves a range of Vietnamese coffee and desserts including che thai for $7.

The Wine Bars

The Inner West has some of the best wine bars in Sydney. The Natural Wine Shop in Surry Hills has a retail section and a wine bar with 12 seats. The wine list focuses exclusively on natural wines from Australian and European producers. Lucky's in Newtown is a 40-seat wine bar with a food menu built around shared plates. The wine list focuses exclusively on Australian producers from the Canberra District, Orange, and the Adelaide Hills.

The Coffee Scene

The Inner West is also the centre of Sydney's specialty coffee scene. Single Origin Roasters in Surry Hills has been the benchmark for Sydney coffee since 2013. Marrickville Roastery in Marrickville opened in 2022 and has developed a strong following for its light-roast filter coffee. Commonfolk Coffee in Marrickville opened in 2023 and has developed a reputation for its cold brew program.
