Applejack Hospitality has opened Winnie's on the Lower Concourse level of the Sydney Opera House, adding a 330-seat all-day dining destination to the harbourside precinct. The venue takes its name from Winifred Atwell, the first woman to perform at the Opera House, and operates from 7am until late across a menu that moves from dedicated coffee and pastries in the morning to seafood-driven share plates and an all-Australian wine and cocktail list by evening.

The opening fills a significant gap in the Opera House's dining scene. While Opera Bar has long operated as a casual waterfront spot and Bennelong has anchored the upper level with fine dining, there has never been a dedicated all-day restaurant on the Lower Concourse. Winnie's occupies the space previously used for event overflow and temporary installations, converting it into a permanent hospitality venue with floor-to-ceiling glass opening onto the George Street terrace.

Winnie's beneath the sails

Winnie's sits directly beneath the western sail of the Opera House, accessible from the Lower Concourse walkway that connects Circular Quay to the main forecourt. The interior references mid-century modern design, with timber joinery sourced from Australian hardwood, banquette seating in muted sage and sandstone tones, and a long marble bar running the length of the room. Natural light enters through a series of clerestory windows above the bar, and the dining room opens onto a covered terrace that looks back toward the Harbour Bridge.

The 330-seat capacity makes it one of the largest single-venue hospitality openings at the Opera House in recent memory. Walk-ins are accepted across the day, with no reservation requirement for parties under eight. The venue is managed by Applejack Hospitality, the group behind SoCal Neutral Bay, The Botanist Kirribilli and other Sydney waterfront operations. The group has specialised in harbourfront sites with high foot traffic and strong tourist appeal, and Winnie's fits precisely into that model.

A menu spanning morning to night

The breakfast and lunch menu centres on coffee, pastries and light share plates, with the coffee program built around house blends and single-origin pour-overs. The kitchen, led by executive chef James Kidman, moves into seafood share plates and larger format dishes for dinner, including snapper baked in rock salt, wood-fired squid and a selection of oysters served raw or grilled. The seafood selection changes with the daily catch from the Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay.

The drinks list covers the full day: espresso and pour-over coffee in the morning, an all-Australian wine list at lunch, and cocktails in the evening. The cocktail program references the harbour setting, with several drinks named after Sydney Harbour landmarks and made with local spirits, native botanicals and seasonal fruit. The bar stays open until late, making it one of the few sit-down options at the Opera House after the main dining service ends.

Honouring Winifred Atwell

Winifred Atwell performed at the Sydney Opera House in 1969, becoming the first woman to headline a concert in the Concert Hall. The venue's namesake is a direct reference to that milestone, and the design includes a small display near the entrance documenting her career. Atwell was a Trinidad-born Australian pianist who sold millions of records in the 1950s and performed for Queen Elizabeth II at the Sydney Opera House more than a decade before the building was officially opened.

The tribute extends to the menu in subtle ways. The pastry program includes a bombolini doughnut filled with vanilla custard and served with a small glass of grappa, a nod to the Italian-Australian tradition of ending a meal with a sweet and a digestif. The bombolini is prepared to order and served warm from the kitchen.

Practical information

Winnie's is located on the Lower Concourse of the Sydney Opera House at Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000. It is a seven-minute walk from Circular Quay Station and is served by train, ferry, light rail and bus services. The venue opens Monday to Sunday from 7am until late, with no reservations required for groups under eight. Accessibility access is available via the lifts from the main forecourt level.

The menu changes with the seasons, and the kitchen adjusts its seafood selection based on daily supply from the Sydney Fish Market.
